The Volleyballer 2020 (2021)
This performance was created in relation to the 1964 Olympic monument that was located in a park nearby my then residence and that I often frequented. Many people visit the park for leisure and other such activities on top of Nogeyama “Mt Noge” Whilst not as high as what I would consider a real mountain, it has an expansive view point of Yokohama city and bay area.
Through my performance I tried to re-activate this piece of history, as it seemingly appeared to blend in with the park environment. I wanted to highlight the monument as well as the monumental changes that had occurred in Japan since 1964 until the present moment. As well as this I wanted to express the varying attitudes towards women’s image in public settings and different localities as well as in sports. I tried to emulate the appearance of the volleyballer etched in stone wearing a bright pink costume similar to an Olympic mascot.
