MIRAGE PAINTING
Linseed oil, pigment, canvas, gold and silver leaf
73 x 91cm
These two paintings were inspired by mirage like spectacles. Visions of light depicting elusive water sources.
Whilst appearing to be real, mirages are optical illusions created by the rippled refraction of light on a hot day or a hopeful apparition or phantasm in the mind’s eye of the perciever. Although they appear to be real, they are in fact beautiful illusions. In this way, there can be a slip between what we see, what we imagine, and reality. It can be said that painting in itself is another kind of illusion that plays between notions of materiality and representations of reality or phantasmagoria.
